Check digit calculation

15th or the last number of the IMEI is a check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm.

The Check Digit is calculated according to Luhn formula. The Check Digit is calculated of all other digits in the IMEI. The purpose of the Check Digit is to help guard against the possibility of incorrect entries to the CEIR and EIR equipment.

The check digit is validated in three steps:

  1. Starting from the right, double a digit every two digits (e.g., 7 → 14).
  2. Sum the digits (e.g., 14 → 1 + 4).
  3. Check if the sum is divisible by 10.

Conversely, one can calculate the IMEI by choosing the check digit that would give a sum divisible by 10. For the example IMEI 35 780502 398494 ?

IMEI number 3 5 7 8 0 5 0 2 3 9 8 4 9 4 ?
Double every other digit 3 10
7 16
0 10
0 4
3 18
8 8
9 8
?
Sum all digits 3 + (1 + 0) + 7 + (1+6) + 0 + (1+0)+ 0 + 4 + 3 + (1+8) + 8 + 8 + 9 + 8 + ? = 68 + ?

Sum of all digits is 68. We need to make it divisible by 10. We need to add 2 to our Sum of 68 and this addition is our check digit. Our complete IMEI is 35 780502 398494 2.

    Why center numbers in IMEI starts with “0″? Example; 00, 01, 02, 03, 04,
    Are they stand for something?

    • admin says:

      Hello Robin,

if you meant start numbers then it is reporting body information which give information about the issuer.
If you meant for numbers at the end of TAC record (in the middle of IMEI) then it has no special meaning nowadays but is part of TAC number.

    Hi,

I calculated my IMEI using the formulae provided. My check digit according to the calculation was 30. However the actual last digit of my IMEI is 6.

I am sure I did my calculations correctly.

I don’t have the box for my iPhone. It was second hand. (NOT STOLEN).

What does this mean for my phone and privacy?

    Thanks,
    Confused.

We noticed some of the phones with wrong check digit but regular. There could be also fake phones. If you are sure that your phone is regular and original, no worry.

012262007960810 seems correct. It should be unique IMEI. We can’t say anything more as we are not authorized to say anything regarding your case.

Not all devices have legal check digit. Especially it happens with DUAL SIM phones which have 2 SIM cards and 2 IMEI numbers.

    hi there
i heard from some source that the 7th and 8th digit indicates the manufacturing country. “00″ means made in main factory, “03″ means made in Korea … and so on.
is it true or not ? if not then -
    1. how so many people talk about it … i mean how they know about manufacturing country ?
    2. what this 7 and 8 digit actually means ?
    3. how can we find the manufacturing country of a specific mobile set ? (with the help of IMEI no., company website, third party website or nay other means)
    waiting 4 ur response …

    • admin says:

There is no formula or logic known to us to get the country from IMEI. Also 7th and 8th digit do not tell you much as far as we know.

My phone was stolen and I called my carrier to get the IMEI for the police report.

    They gave me this 18-digit #: 268435461012181021.
When I took off the last 3 digits (to make it 15 digits) and applied the algorithm, it didn’t check; but it checked when I used all 18. Is this normal?
