Stolen phone

There are a lot of people all over the world whose mobile phone was stolen or lost. Because mobile phone is a device which has its own serial number called IMEI we can do something to increase possibility to find it or to prevent usage of it.

What to do if your phone is stolen or lost?

First of all the case should be reported to your mobile operator and to local police station. After this you can submit your phones IMEI number to global stolen phones database. A lot of people checks the database and can recognize your mobile before buying it from second hand (if it is submited in database). If you are not sure what phone model and manufacturer you have check here.

Tracing your mobile phone

Is it possible to trace your phone? Well, actualy it is possible, but it depends where your mobile is, how much will your operator care about your phone, what kind of software is instaled on your lost or stolen phone, what did new owner do to prevent finding it and few more things…

Tracing mobile – Software

The best way is to do something by yourself. There is a lot of software on the internet which allows you to get information about the current user of your phone, location (if your phone supports GPS), to delete your phonebook remotely, to lock your phone etc…

Check the program list forĀ  anti-theft, tracking, locating software for mobile phones which works on different platforms, some of them are FREE and some are commercial

Anti-theft, tracking, locating software

Can they change my IMEI number and prevent finding my phone?

Your phones IMEI number can be changed but not so easy as it was with old mobile phones. Now chips and electronic is not done the same way because it is not rewritable as you want. It is one time writable and not rewritable. Changing chips on mobile phones motherboard is harder and not everybody have a knowledge to change it… if they know how then they will do it but it could be very expensive because it is harder. The question is if the price is still acceptable.

if u are not able to find the mobile and the current user with the help of IMEI number , then what is the use of IMEI number for common people like us

        • admin says:

There are people which recognize that their phone might be fake and not real. It is not the 100% information, but you could double check then.

  5. Imran says:

Hi can you suggest me the softwares which i can install for tracking

    • admin says:

      Hello Imran,

it is hard to say. It all depends on your needs and your operating system. We did not test all of listed software which you can find here http://imei-number.com/anti-theft-mobile-tracking-software/
Commercial software seems to be a little bit better with its functionalities but if you need only basic functionality also FREE software could be fine.

Check the list on the link, find all software that support your operating system and then decide and test one. I am sure that you will find one for your phone.

      Regards

Good day, my son’s Blackberry bold was stolen, and we do not know the IMEI number. Is there any other way we can have our service provider shut it down? Thanks

    • admin says:

If you bought it from this service provider, they could maybe have an IMEI sold to you. Other way is to check IMEI on the box of the phone if you still have the box. No other way on my mind in this moment.

    • admin says:

Call operators customer support and ask about procedure which you explained here. If they support such tracking they will advise you, if not they will let you know.

Don’t expect the answer, give me your IMEI, I will check right now… as you are not the only one who is looking for its mobile phone and as there are high level of security issues it could last forever to find the phone.

i have a gps device in my phone and i want to check in its location. So can i trace it with the software by myself? The software that are mentioned above? Can i trace the location of my lost phone through my current phone or computer?

    • admin says:

If you did not install anti-theft or tracking software before you want to trace it, then it is not possible. If you have your phone in hands you can install suitable software and trace it while it has GPS signal.

      • rick says:

my phone’s already lost. It was a symbian (s 60) phone which has a pre-installed gps device so yet without having those software you’ve mentioned, is it not possible for me to trace the location of my phone? Please do help.

        • admin says:

If you didn’t install any software, your chances are much smaller. Check with local police and operator.

  17. shwetank says:

How long does it take to track a phone once its IMEI is reported to both police and service provider?

In different countries operators checks this differently. Some of them do not check it at all. We do not have information how each operator search for stolen devices.

        • admin says:

You are only one of the thousands people whose phone is stolen or lost. Do you know how many other things police has to do? I am sure that they don’t have enough time to do all things.

          • aamaadmi says:

IF Police cannot do this, then there let a new body be formed where people can approach them. OR let carriers handle it. Police just want money that is it.

          • admin says:

Unfortunately there is needed to have people assigned to do this in technical and operational area. Usually employees have a lot of other work.

          • Pran says:

Hell ….Police should do all the duty ……there is no priority in their duty …..They know how t o take money …give them money they will do evertything. Thats indian police.

    -kundan

    • admin says:

      Dear Kundan,

we do not offer to search phone by IMEI, but we allow to find what brand and model are behind IMEI number. It is recognizing tool and not tracking and searching tool.

      • Mihir says:

Sir,is there any possibity 2 get contact number through emei number which is stolen

        • admin says:

If you had installed anti-theft application and if it is not uninstalled and if phone is switched on and if sim card has enough credit and if you correctly set up settings in the app, then it is maybe possible. If any of those answers is no or unknown, then it is possibly not possible unfortunately.

  28. kasturi says:

What police do to search lost or stolen phones? Police, Mobile operators and Service providers do nothing. If once phone is lost or stolen, we should just forget our lovely phone. Every procedure is useless. We will never get lost or stolen cell back.

    • admin says:

Unfortunately there are thousands of stolen and lost phones each month in each country and it is mission impossible to look for all of them.

For this reason I am sure that police do nothing special to find each of them. You can register your phone in http://www.stolen-phone.com and maybe somebody will find your phone and get it back.

  29. Chetan says:

Can the IEMI number of Sansung Galaxy Y be changed/altered???

    • admin says:

It is very hard with new phones. You need a specialist to do this as you need special equipment, knowledge and very high motivation for doing this. In any moment, you can destroy your phone. You need to resolder some chip which is very small and complicated to do this.

  32. admin says:

    NO

  33. teeman says:

hi, how can a network provider locate a stolen phone using the IMEI number.
I lost my phone recently and approached my network provider but i was told the phone cant be
located using the IMEI number alone. how true is this. i believe the network operator can locate which sim card is using the the phone with the said IMEI number. pls throw more light.

    • admin says:

If phone is not used in their network, they can’t do anything. If it is in their network, they can find who is using your phone (SIM card or MSISDN).

  34. teeman says:

I lost my galaxy s1 phone and there are a lot of data on the phone which could be used as cyber attack on me. how can i remotely erase the data on the phone using the imei number. i did not activate the anti theft software on the phone as at the time it was misplaced. i understand there are series of code which could be used to carry out such act, pls advise.

If I send you the imei number, can you help me track the phone?

  41. Sanjana says:

Admin, I am so happy that you are answering everyone’s questions even though they are the same. I just have this one question Should I really hope of getting back my phone? It was an optimus L 5 and i lost it on 9th October,2012. And I am still mourning over it. The authorities seem to be ignorant. And I want my phone back! Will registering and talking to service providers really help me get back my phone?

    • admin says:

If I am honest, we mostly delete questions because we receive hundreds of the same questions eventhough we noticed that we cannot search for phones or provide any detailed informaiton which could help users. We do not have such equipment. Back to your question… all things you do, you will have more chances to get your phones back. Authorities are not ignorant because they want to be, but they also don’t always have enough details to find your phone and more important thing, they have much more important things to do. Submit your case to online databases and increase chances to be found by honest founder or possible buyer.

Hello, unfortunately there is no way that you can find your phone by yourself or with help of us. All you can do is to submit report to police, notify your service provider (operator) and inform people who are searching online before buying second hand phone or other devices. One of such online services is http://www.imeidetective.com but please note that this page is only informative and nobody will be able to search anything for you.

  56. RR@BKP says:

    Hi,

I lost my Samsung phone today while traveling in train (not sure if somebody picked it up). When I called back, a person took it up 3-4 times and after that he has switched it off. I have made a lost mobile police complaint in GRPP though, as it was quite late at night and the nearest GRPP official told I need to go to a distant GRPP post to lodge a stolen complaint. Also, he said even if the phone is not found, I need to appear for court summons after investigation to give my confirmation in case I lodge a stolen complaint.
    Is that true??
One thing is true the attitude of the police officials look very reluctant!!
Funniest thing, he told me that even he has lost 2 phones but didn’t do anything. :-)
The good part in my case is that the Mobile tracker had been kept on, hopefully there would be some response pretty soon.

  57. Jimi says:

This is bulshit what the wrote. It’s very easy to change imei. for example new phones like i9300 or n7100 you can change imei in few minutes. it depends only how quick you wrote on PC keyboard. Do You ask me about tool? NS Pro or z3x box. You need also only usb cable and 2 rj45 cables. for NS Pro it is called s7070 rj45 cable for z3x only micor usb rj45
